Favorite Thanksgiving Strategies

Today I wanted to share a few of my favorite songs, stories, and strategies that I use during Thanksgiving.

1. The Ten Days of Thanksgiving

This is a great song with accompanying video by Rachel Rambach, MT-BC and I love to use it with many of my groups. I made a visual aid version of the video by printing/laminating picture cards of the ten foods, and the kids "put it on their plate" via a file folder and velcro. This is a great song to target "wh" questions, articulation, memory/recall, counting, and more.

2. Mahalo

I discussed how I use this song on a previous blog post here. I have a visual aid that I may use with this song, but I also love to use it as a calming instrument song. It's a great way to start a discussion with your clients about what Thanksgiving is really about, and what they are thankful for.

3. 10 Fat Turkeys

This is a cute story that targets counting and subtraction! I like to bring in manipulatives such as foam turkey shapes to help my clients count.

4. I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie

I. Love. These. Books. I have one for almost every season and holiday! I repurposed an old show box, and turned it into my old lady with an open mouth, so students can actually have the old lady "eat" their objects! I found a great printable from the awesome website OMazing Kids which focuses on incorporating yoga into children's every day lives. I use the same tune as "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly." You may want to change the phrase "Perhaps she'll die" with another phrase such as "Perhaps she'll sigh" or "cry" or something else. :)

Well, that's all I have for now! I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday with your loved ones. :)
